Effect of intercropping wheat with forage legumes on wheat production and ground cover PAB
Tomm,Gilberto Omar; Foster,Robert Kerry.
The use of winter legumes in southern Brazil is hindered by the slow growth of these species during establishment exposing soil surface to erosion. Introduction of these species along with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied as a means of increasing ground cover during their initial establishment period, without reducing wheat grain yield. Two experiments were conducted in nearby areas, one in each year. Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cultivar Quiñequelli, white clover (T. repens L.), and arrowleaf clover (T. vesiculosum Savi) did not reduce cereal yield in either year. Wheat yield was reduced by intercropped red clover cultivar Kenland and by subclover (T. subterraneum L.) in the first year. No...

Environmental variables and tree population structures in deciduous forests of central Brazil with different levels of logging BABT
Vieira,Daniel Luis Mascia; Scariot,Aldicir.
Population structures of six tree species in three fragments of intact seasonal deciduous forest and three fragments disturbed by logging were studied in the northeastern Goiás. Forty random 400 m² plots were allocated in each fragment to survey plant population structures, number of stumps, cattle feces, burnt logs, and canopy openness. Soil cover by life forms was estimated in 1m² sub-plots. Lianas were abundant in intermediately logged fragments and invasive herbs in the most disturbed fragment. Cattle avoided dense herbaceous strata, such as liana tangles. Cavanillesia arborea, Eugenia dysenterica and Swartzia multijuga trees occurred at very low densities in all the fragments and their seedlings were practically absent, which might endanger their...

Initial Development of Eucalyptus According to Different Desiccation Periods of Signalgrass Planta Daninha
GRAAT,Y.; BACHA,A.L.; NEPOMUCENO,M.P.; ALVES,P.L.C.A..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed at evaluating the effects of different desiccation periods of Urochloa decumbens on the initial development of Eucalyptus urograndis (clone C-219H). The experiment was conducted in 100 liter concrete boxes, previously filled with Dark-Red Latosol. U. decumbens was sown in all plots, except for the control sample without covering. After 95 days from sowing, the herbicide glyphosate (dose of 1,424 g a.e. ha-1) was sprayed at intervals of 0 (Apply-Plant), 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days before eucalyptus planting, plus a control sample without covering, totaling seven treatments. A completely randomized design with six replications was used. Eucalyptus plants were evaluated 30, 60 and 90 days after planting (DAP), when the height of the...

Measurement of above-ground plant biomass, forage availability and grazing impact by combining satellite image processing and field survey in a dry area of north-eastern Syria OAK
Hirata, Masahiro; Koga, N; Shinjo, H; Fujita, H; Gintzburger, G; Ishida, J; Miyazaki, A.
Field survey and satellite image processing methods were used to estimate the total available forage over an area of 95 034 ha in north-eastern Syria, and to assess grazing impact on the area. The above-ground plant biomass was measured by a quadrat method at three sites in each of eight vegetation classes. Available forage was measured by excluding woody parts of shrubs from the whole aerial plant parts. The total above-ground plant biomass and available forage were estimated by extrapolating the measured point data to the whole target area using classified vegetation data by satellite image processing. Grazing impact was assessed by calculating the differences between the total available forage at the end of growing season and the end of dry season. The...

Microbial Communities in Soil Cultivated with Muskmelon under Different Management Systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nascimento,Paula Gracielly Morais Lima do; Cruz,Beatriz Letícia Silva da; Dantas,Andréa Mirne de Macêdo; Freitas,Francisco Cláudio Lopes de; Ambrósio,Márcia Michelle de Queiroz; Sales Júnior,Rui.
ABSTRACT Microorganisms have a fundamental importance in agricultural ecosystems and may be influenced by several factors, including soil management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cropping systems and soil covers on the microbial community in soil cultivated with muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.). The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a split plot design with cropping systems (no-tillage and conventional tillage systems) assigned to the whole plot treatments, while a group of seven soil covers (sunn hemp; millet; sunn hemp + millet; corn + brachiaria; spontaneous vegetation; bare soil; and spontaneous vegetation + polyethylene film) defined the subplot...

Procedimento para estimativa da intensidade de precipitação máxima admissível em pivô-central com base nas características do equipamento e do solo. Infoteca-e
RODRIGUES, L. N.; PRUSKI, F. F.; SILVA, E. M. da.
ABSTRACT: A procedure to estimate the center pivot maximum application rate, based on equipment and soil characteristic is presented. It was developed to minimize the surface runoff. To achieve this objective, the Green and Ampt (GA) infiltration equation was modified to include surface sealing and surface storage. The highest application rate is determined by solving a system of equations which incout to application rate and its derivative and the GA and its derivative. Sensitivit analysis showed that the procedure represented adequately the variation in the main parameters that interfere in the value of the maximum application rate. This methodology can be used to desing the optimum center pivot irrigation system for given combination of soil, climate...

Quantification and control of runoff and soil erosion on avocado orchards on ridges along steep-hillslopes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Youlton,Cristian; Espejo,Paulina; Biggs,Jaime; Norambuena,Marcela; Cisternas,Marco; Neaman,Alexander; Salgado,Eduardo.
Soil erosion increases after building downward ridges along steep hillslopes, in particular during the first winter. This erosion decreases when trees grow, but runoff increases. This study presents results of erosion under five different treatments: (i) soil cover with native vegetation, (ii) bare downward ridges, (iii) downward ridges with six year-old avocado orchard, (iv) downward ridges with plant cover and (v) downward ridges covered with agroindustrial waste sludge. The results revealed 20 t ha-1 of soil erosion during the first year after ridges were built, while mitigation measures can reduce erosion in 90%. Adult orchard showed the largest runoff, which probably is due to the effect of a high and about constant soil moisture during irrigation...

Vegetation characterization in gully areas as basis for soil conservation Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Gomide,Plínio Henrique Oliveira; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Castro,Gislene Carvalho de; Soares,Cláudio Roberto Fonsêca Sousa; Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Curi,Nilton.
Gullies are an expression of intense environmental degradation, particularly soil and vegetation. The objective of this work was to characterize the natural regeneration and vegetation planted in gully areas in the south of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, so the distribution and occurrence of the species can generate useful information for an adequate diagnosis on the development stage of gullies and for soil conservation. The study involved the characterization of vegetation present in the different segments of the gully areas, the bed, the bare middle third (BMT), middle third with vegetation cover (MTVC), and a fragment of native vegetation (FNV) located closer to the gully areas and adopted as a reference. In the gully area 3, the sampling took place in...
